The Chicken Xacuti Recipe

Chicken Xacuti / Chacuti (pronounced shakuti)


Ingredients for Chicken Xacuti

1.5 kilo chicken (or mutton) cut into medium size pieces
3 onions
1.5 tsp salt

Fry the following ingredients in oil (do not blacken):

20 kashmiri chillies,
12 cloves
30 pepper corns
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tbsp khus khus (poppy seeds)
1 star anise
1 tbsp badishep / saunf (fennel seeds)
2 petals of javitri (mace)
2 tbsp coriander seeds
small pinch of  methi seeds (fenugreek)
1 tsp mustard seeds
2 inch cinnamon stick
1 tsp. turmeric powder
1 big onion

Separately fry 1.5 coconut (scraped) in a little oil till light brown.


Grind the coconut along with the rest of the fried masala to a thick paste.
Fry the remaining two onions (chopped) in oil well.
Add the chicken (already cut in medium sized pieces) and continue to fry for 10 minutes.
Add the ground masala and fry for another 5 minutes.
Add 3 cups of hot water and  salt to taste. Cook until chicken is cooked.
